“Taking some time to make works on paper felt freeing for me. I was painting in a more direct fashion. Working on paper allowed me to move through ideas quickly and with less hesitation. These new paintings of forest landscapes surprised me. I feel more connected to the subject than ever before. I have always held nature to be a tonic to most of life’s unhappiness; something about being deep in a forest can pretty much cure anything going on with me. I grew up going to the Adirondacks and continue to spend a lot of time there. Sitting in my Brooklyn studio now, looking at what I have made, I feel good about it. They feel to me like small windows that don’t try to compete with nature but rather, in a lighthearted way, just remind me of the happy peaceful feeling I get after a long day clearing my mind in the woods... ”
