The sea is our future, past and present. Our last resort and wilderness, a place of performance, transcending time and space. Here on the Cape we're in it. We feel its sensual power, its tug and flow. A body of water, a physical presence. It contains ninety per cent of all life on our planet, from vast whales to microscopic plankton. It supplies the air we breathe and the food we eat. Yet we turn our backs on it, fearful of what lies under 'the ocean's skin', as Melville saw it.
But art can slip beneath that skin. RISINGTIDEFALLINGSTAR's artists see the sea with reverence, flippancy and passion. They celebrate and mourn its natural state, and wonder what it's like to give yourself up to the amniotic fluid in which we all once swam. They're stupefied and mystified by the sea. They can't help it, or us. But they can take us to a place where things become rich and strange and where, in the end, we all come face to face with our own selves.
